9.05.14 Definitions

Agora- This was a central gathering in ancient Greek city-states. It was the central life of of the city where athletics, politics, and art are found.

Arete- The aggregate of good qualities that make up good character.

Polis- It is a Greek word meaning "city."

508 BC- One of the first known democracies developed in the Greek city-state of Athens in 508 BC. it was in Athens and the surrounding territory of Attica.

Socrates- An Athenian philosopher whose virtue was based on knowledge.

The Death of Socrates- He was charged for corrupting the youth's minds and for disrespecting the gods. He defended himself and plead guilt but did not care. His death was shown in a 1776 canvas oil painting by the french painter Jacques-Louis David.

Socratic Method- A type of question and answer discussion between people. 

If an ancient Greek called you an idiot they were saying that you are someone who is not interested in politics or a generally private person.
